The U.S. EPA is supervising the cleanup of a former industrial site operated by CTS of Asheville, Inc. at 235 Mills Gap Road. The site was added to the federal “Superfund” list in 2012. Regulators found high levels of the chemical trichloroethylene (TCE) in the soil of the site as well as in the groundwater and natural springs surrounding the property. Southside Village, a residential development, was built on part of the former CTS site and residents there have been working with federal and state regulators. Remediation plans have been debated for many years, with the property owners and its contractor seeking to limit the acreage of the cleanup area. The EPA recently approved a plan to use a more passive method to remove TCE from a larger area on the site.
